Excel Unlock Utility

After I implemented and deployed the PDF Unlocking Tool, I was fortunate to find out it became very popular. Apparently I had written and deployed a useful tool.

It's popularity got me thinking, what else I could write that would be helpful to others? Then it hit me, just like PDF files are sometimes restricted, preventing users from copying and pasting their content, sometimes Excel spreadsheets contain locked, uneditable cells.

I started looking around for Java libraries to manipulate Excel spreadsheets, and found JExcelAPI. I started researching this library and sure enough, I found a way to unlock cells in an Excel spreadsheet.

Using this API, I developed an online utility to unlock cells in a spreadsheet, which can be found at http://ensode.net/xls-crack.jsf. It soon became a very popular destination on my site.

When I submit an .xls file with the terms agreed to, it just opens a new browser. I am using Office '07, but the file is an old .xls

Same thing for me. After submitting the .xls file, I just get another window opened to the same page - with both IE and Firefox.

Pez & Working,

The utility does open a new window showing the same page, however it should have a "download" pop up come up.

Perhaps there is some setting that needs to be modified in your browsers?

Hi. I encountered the same problem as the previous 2 posters.

Posted by Bean on December 14, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST #

I have the same problem. There is no download/information in the new window.

Posted by Andrew on December 22, 2008 at 06:08 PM EST #

about the "download" pop up problem: it's not a browser problem. It appears that this application can't unlock all xls files. When a file is NOT successfully unlocked, there is no download popup coming up and user doesn't understand what has happened. Author could consider displaying an error message when a file conversion is not successful.

Kinda worked - new spreadsheet was full of blacked out cells and would take an age to repair/correct, not worth my time but thanks anyhow.

I've been trying unsuccessfully to upload and unlock an excel file. I'm not sure if the size is the problem (2.3Mb) or what might be the problem.

The error I get (now, previously attempts had no error):
javax.servlet.ServletException: viewId:/xls-crack.jsf - View /xls-crack.jsf could not be restored.

Let me know your thoughts.

Hello there,

The unlock for XLS file is not working. I tried a couple of times, but it just keeps opening the same URL, http://www.ensode.net/ensode/xls-crack.jsf.

Hello, I have forgotten the password to my xls file and I tried using the online utility to unlock the file. Unfortunately no file was not displayed in a new browser window or automatically open file in excel that is installed on my PC. Any ideas?

Many Thanks.
